San Clemente Beta test a success! Time to get serious here. After spending some quality time with San Diego Westy... "la van" is in full effect! Yup no official name yet, just la van or the van, a bit of a tough cookie this one. She's no Candy but I think thats a good thing. More on the naming later, the important being that we're on the road. As planned, it's lunchtime friday and making my way to the border from Chula Juana. I'm not too nervous that this will be home for the next while. As for Mexico, it wasn't the first time taking the van south and seems I've been down here every weekend for months. Don't get me wrong, I am nervous. But it's more of an overall what the fuck I am doing kinda nervous. Must occupy myself, that will help. Oh yeah, need food, next stop Calimax... beans, rice, avocados, onion, tomatoes, chiles, you know the drill if you've been to any of the carne asadas (gringo speak: mexican bbq). I think I have everything now, just need to figure out where exactly I'm going. A quick check with my baja surfer guide, crosscheck with Camping in Baja and we all are in agreement. La fonda, now more popularly known as K58, its a surfer camp on the bluffs overlooking a long sandy beach. Lots of great beach breaks here, I will call you home tonight.
At night, wow its windy. Really windy. I learned a very important lesson last night... mostly of being rocked around by crazy gusts which repeatedly and abruptly woke me from sleep: You cannot just sit up (especially with force) while lying down in la van in sleep mode. Vertical space is very limited. The good thing come morning, the surf was on! Unfortuanely my physiques were not. At least one wave, one ride. That has been a long time habit of mine after making the effort to suit up and paddle out. Just get one decent ride. Today I was successfull at breaking that habit. Not one wave. There were plenty, just none meant for me. 30 minutes in the water (being a little generous here) and it was time to call it. Damn, I am out of shape! Strange, six months no exercise and generous libations will do that? I'd like to think I'm the bigger person here... I didn't push myself too hard and made it back to the beach safe, although feeling a little defeated and out of breath.
Moving on... Tomorrow is another day. Trying to staying positive here. Theres plenty of time to get back. Ok lets get productive! I think I need to reorganize all my belongings. To clarify: I live in a van. Efficient and effective are two very appropriate and important words. A couple hours of thinking where does the can opener belong and do I really need four different hot sauces (I do) its time to do some research on the next steps, catch up on Ira Glass and start thinking about dinner. I've got a couple of choice cuts of meat ready to grill up along with some chipotle refried beans, corn tortillas with queso cotija and not quite ripe avocados... almost perfect! Well, great timing anyways, another beautiful BC sunset to pair as I sit down to eat.
Writing this up and now its about time for bed. Tomorrow is another day. Hopping to bring the habit back. Will report back on progress!
